Brooklyn Flea or Brooklyn Flee

I just spent a week in Brooklyn (in Bensonhurst where I grew up and spent my life trying to get away from) tending to family matters.

While there, I rented a booth at the famous Brooklyn Flea in Ft. Greene. I had resisted shleeping stuff into the city since opening the Tincan Trading Post up here, in my beautiful trailers. But after a completely rained out summer, I needed a new venue (with lots of cool people) for showcasing my "tincan" concept and actually selling some select goods.

So I gave it a shot - up at 4:30 and by 6:30 I was sitting in my over packed Jeep with a deer head on the passenger seat and squeezed into the last parking spot on Vanderbilt Ave. drinking coffee and eating a bagel.

I brought an edited selection of goods that covered only a small range of the categories I have been collecting - but very beautiful and unusual things that I thought would be better appreciated in the city than they are up here.

The hit of the day in Ft. Greene were 4 pairs of unworn Suede Spectators - probably from the 40's very Fred Astaire looking? As soon as I un-packed them a Japanese couple scooped up a pair and also a pair of leather riding boots I had. Several chic women bought the other 3 pairs of spectators.

I had a 3 piece group of original McCobb chairs and a coffee table from the Planner series. I was asking$250 a piece or $750 the set. Great price!! There was lots of interest and drooling over them but no one bit. Most people wanted just 1 chair and I didn't want to split the pair. I regretted having to load them back in the jeep. Next week I'll let them go by the piece.

I'll be in Ft. Greene again this weekend - Saturday Oct. 3, 2009.

Eric and Rob are the guys running the Flea and they generously added a blurb about me and the trading post on the Browstoner blog. http://www.brownstoner.com/brooklynflea/
